Lori Verbrugge, PhD, Environmental Public Health Program Manager

Lori Verbrugge

Lori Verbrugge is the Environmental Public Health Program manager for the Alaska Division of Public Health. She has been working to assess the human health implications of contaminants in Alaska’s environment since 1997. Dr. Verbrugge oversees various environmental health programs, including human biomonitoring, adult blood lead surveillance, subsistence food safety, environmental health research, and an ATSDR cooperative agreement to assess the public health implications of contaminated sites in Alaska.

Dr. Verbrugge received her Ph.D. in Environmental Toxicology from Michigan State University, where she researched the toxicological effects of PCBs and dioxins on fish-eating birds under the direction of Dr. John Giesy. She also holds a M.S. degree in Fisheries and Wildlife from Michigan State University, and a B.S. degree in Environmental Toxicology from the University of California at Davis.

Chung Nim Ha, MPH, Health Educator

Chung Nim Ha

Chung Nim Ha has been the health educator for the Environmental Public Health Program since January 2007. She provides expertise and leadership for health education and community involvement activities at hazardous waste sites and other contaminated areas in Alaska. Ms. Ha collaborates with other state and federal agencies to enable communities to prevent or mitigate the health impacts of exposures to hazardous environmental substances.

Ms. Ha received her undergraduate degree from Stanford University and her Master of Public Health degree in Health Behavior/Health Education from the University of Michigan. She worked for ten years at the Minnesota Department of Health as a research scientist in their Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program. She spent most of her childhood in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Rachel Kossover, MPH, Public Health Prevention Specialist

Rachel Kossover

Rachel Kossover is a CDC Public Health Prevention Service fellow assigned to the State of Alaska from October 2008 to October 2010. Her main responsibilities are the coordination of the Statewide Hair Mercury Biomonitoring Program and the Lead Surveillance Program.

Ms. Kossover is a registered dietitian. Before coming to Alaska, Ms. Kossover worked in the areas of diabetes prevention and adult weight management in the urban Native American community in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She received her Master in Public Health in Public Health Nutrition from the University of Minnesota, and her undergraduate degree in Nutrition from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Ms. Kossover grew up in North Dakota.

Mo Otto, Administrative Clerk

Mo Otto

Mo Otto has worked in the public health field providing clerical support for the past 12 years. She has worked for the HIV/AIDS Program, Women’s, Children’s and Family Health, and the Immunization Program, and began working for the Environmental Public Health Program in February 2007.

Ms. Otto grew up and went to high school in a small town in Wisconsin and joined the military shortly after graduation. She was an aircraft hydraulic technician and worked on a variety of fighter aircraft when she was stationed in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ms. Otto has been married for nearly thirty years and has three grown children and one Labrador retriever. She enjoys walking, gardening, camping and music. She has lived in Alaska for 20 years and really enjoys this state.
