HIV Program

Epidemiology

The HIV Program components include:

  • HIV/AIDS case surveillance to monitor trends in the epidemic and help guide prevention and treatment programs;
  • assistance to affected individuals and their providers with partner notification services;
  • continuing education and technical assistance related to HIV/AIDS among medical, other health, and social service providers, as well as for educators. The Northwest AIDS Education and Training Center at the University of Washington is one of our key partners in health professions education;
  • information and policy guidance for health, social service, educational, and other organizations, as well as for the general public, in areas related to HIV and AIDS; and
  • funding for priority HIV prevention and care services.

Direct client services in HIV/AIDS prevention and care are delivered through public and private providers in communities around the state. HIV/AIDS care services funded through the HIV/STD Program are overseen by three regional HIV Care Consortia:

  1. Anchorage/Statewide, coordinated by the Alaskan AIDS Assistance Association;
  2. Fairbanks/Interior, coordinated by the Interior AIDS Association; and
  3. Juneau/Southeast Alaska, coordinated by the Alaskan AIDS Assistance Association.

Services provided by or funded through these organizations include case management, education, counseling, advocacy, and funding for other outpatient medical, laboratory, dental, mental health and supportive services, as well as prescribed HIV-related medications. (These agencies receive funds from other sources which provide support for housing and other services for eligible individuals.) The State also supports an AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) providing antiretroviral medications for eligible HIV-infected individuals statewide.

Priorities among HIV prevention needs, and the types of interventions to be supported through State grant funds, are developed collaboratively with the statewide HIV Prevention Planning Group, and presented in the comprehensive HIV Prevention Plan for Alaska.
