HOSPITALIZATIONS FOR PNEUMONIA AND INFLUENZA

Pneumonia and Flu Hospitalizations by Week

Notes:

  1. These data are gathered by weekly survey of all 25 Alaska hospitals.
  2. From September 1 through October 31, 2009, hospitalization data were limited to patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza.
  3. Reports since November 1, 2009 represent the number of patients who were hospitalized with a new case of clinically diagnosed pneumonia or influenza-like illness (regardless of whether or not influenza was laboratory-confirmed) during the previous week. This expanded reporting criterion enhances our capacity to estimate the burden of influenza-associated hospitalizations in Alaska.
  4. The Section of Epidemiology reports these data weekly to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

LABORATORY-CONFIRMED INFLUENZA DEATHS

Flu Deaths by Week

Notes:

  1. These data are gathered by weekly survey of all 25 Alaska hospitals. Not all hospitals may respond in a given week.
  2. Out of hospital deaths of any Alaska resident, regardless of location of death, are also counted.
  3. Deaths are counted in the week in which the death occurred.

INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS (ILI)

Influenza-like Illness Surveillance

In Alaska, the percentage of Influenza-like-illness (ILI) visits to sentinel providers for the week ending November 14, 2009 was 3.0%. Nationally, the percentage of ILI visits to sentinel providers for the week ending November 7, 2009 was 6.7%. This percentage was above the national baseline of 2.3%.
Updated 11/18/2009

Percentage of Visits for Influenza-like Illness reported by the US Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance Network (ILINet) in Alaska

Note: The weekly percentage is based on an average of 255 patient visits per week.
